I read a quote the other day attributed to Coco Chanel that said, “I don’t care what you think about me, I don’t think about you at all.” It made me laugh out loud. In fashion that’s funny. In politics, not so much.
As Independence Day approaches, and ideas of freedom are explored and ignored in politics, freedom in fashion continues to thrive. For fashion is one of the purest forms of self-expression we have in our culture.
A motto I prefer more than Coco Chanel’s is something I used to see in yoga class. It was in a small frame, which, the teacher, Billy Porter, would move around the room. You would only notice it, when you were looking at other people, and comparing yourself. It said, “Be you, not them.”
